NHS Fife

NHS Fife - building and upgrade project

Facts and figures

  • Project comprising new build and conventional refurbishment
  • Parallel work across two hospitals simultaneously
  • Flexible resource allocation to meet tight project schedules

This complex multi-million pound project comprises a number of elements. A new hospital building at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy is being constructed under a PPP arrangement. Existing buildings at Victoria Hospital and Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline are being refurbished by Interserve.

There are also enabling works at Kirkcaldy to allow the new and refurbished buildings to be linked at various points.

A major challenge for Interserve, was to establish close integration across two design teams and two supply chains, enabling parallel work and design to occur across the two hospitals simultaneously. To that end, the team was co-located with both the NHS team and the PPP team, thus improving communication links and developing a true team approach.

A further benefit of this open, partnering ethos was rapid resolution of issues. Throughout the project, the Interserve team demonstrated an ability to ramp up its resources when necessary to ensure delivery within very tight timescales.

This arrangement also supported NHS Fife by providing a rapid review of evolving project details and delivery assumptions against time and cost.
