The design and build of Vermuyden school is a redevelopment project procured under the four-year East Riding of Yorkshire Council Construction Works Framework.
The school has been designed to facilitate use by the local community and will provide a Family Resource Centre, youth centre, school gym and changing rooms, car park and bus lay-by, brand new teaching facilities and external and ancillary works.
The new teaching facilities will include bespoke ICT suites, a design and technology area, music and drama rooms and will provide a centre of excellence for post-16 learning in collaboration with the three local secondary schools, Hull College and the Learning and Skills Council Humberside. The work is being undertaken in three phases, with Phase 1 being completed and Phase 2 currently in progress.
Achievements
- Sustainability: Maximum use of natural light; natural ventilation; use of solar glazing; sedum roofs and extensive Cedar boarding have been included within the designs. Energy efficient replacement equipment and fittings will be used in Phase 3
- Extensive value engineering for the re-design of Phase 1 saved the ERYC approximately £1m
- Having worked with ERYC since 2005 on a number of projects, we have developed an understanding of their drivers and operating methods, giving us the opportunity to continuously improve and customise our service
- Improved safety: Creating a new access with a separate safe area for buses means that pupils go from buses straight onto pedestrian routes A controlled access road with speed bumps and dedicated walkways is being provided, so that pupils will not need to cross any roads within the school site
- Minimal disruption: Installed a roadway to allow site access for deliveries and site vehicles, whilst leaving the existing access open for school traffic
- Collaborative working: Workshops with ERYC and the School resulted in the best use of space, while consultations with stakeholders such as the local residents strengthen relationships with the community
- Pupils and staff have been decanted into fully-equipped temporary classrooms for the eighteen-month duration which are twice the size of the old ones, providing the School with more than a temporary fix
Head Teacher, Danuta Tomasz, said: “The temporary building is a proper school, it is just moved into a different place. It makes a safer happier place for students.”
