Runways upgrade, RAF Brize Norton

Facts and figures

An Interserve project to upgrade the runway, taxiways and ground lighting at RAF Brize Norton has maintained functional use of the airfield and extended the operational life of the runway by at least 15 years.

Delivered as part of the RAF CATARA project, Interserve introduced a number of innovations including the use of a 'bolthole' period with RAF Fairford to maintain the programme and the implementation of the first ever Digital Control Management System on a military establishment, as well as an Instrument Runway Visual Range system (IRVR).

Omni directional light fittings were installed to increase the flexibility of runway use and capital costs were managed more effectively by using stone mastic asphalt where possible, which is readily available and more economical than Marshall asphalt.

Sustainable Development responsibilities were addressed by reducing traffic movement through the surrounding villages and effectively discharging road sweepings by installing sediment tanks on the disused runway.
