Alternative heating systems
Facts and figures
- Landmarc is a joint venture involving Interserve, created to manage The Defence Training Estate, covering some 120 sites, over 12 regions in the UK
- Paul Lincoln, Built Estate Manager for DTE South East said: “The trial has delivered impressive results in terms of energy efficiencies but it also demonstrates the dynamics of the partnering agreement between Landmarc and DTE. With a wealth of in-house knowledge and experience we were able to manage this project without the need to employ an external consultant”
Why did we do this?
Interserve is committed to providing sustainable building services so when heating systems at a site on the Defence Training Estate were coming to the end of their life, a study to identify the best practical sustainable option was undertaken.
Crowborough Camp began life before the First World War as a tented facility with wooden cookhouses. Despite development of the site and related heating systems over the years, the current heating system was no longer able to serve the requirements of modern armed forces or of a world coming to terms with depleting fuel sources and global warming.
How did we do this?
Research was conducted into alternatives available that would serve the needs of site but also set a benchmark for similar projects across the estate. Two innovative systems were identified as possibilities and they were trialled alongside two conventional systems for a year. Meters were fixed to each system to facilitate measuring energy consumption and so associated carbon emissions. There was a clear winner – the ground source heat pump.
Benefits
- 70 per cent reduction in carbon emissions
- 50 per cent - 70 per cent reduction in running costs
- Reduced maintenance costs
- Reduced use of fossil fuels
- Improved quality of accommodation
- Added value to others through roll out and best practice sharing
